May 2017 – LMBA welcomes Blair Taylor as keynote speaker at its 30th Annual Philip L. Burton Memorial Scholarship Dinner and honors scholarship recipients Joyce Bruce, James Carr, Nyachom Chiek, Rachel Nicole Coleman, Darrah Hinton, Astor Kidane, Jamison Nichols, Janet Rodrigues, Syesha Thomas, Brittany Torrence and Tadeu Velloso. LMBA presents its annual awards to Kelly Harris (Community Service Award), Lem Howell (Social Justice Award), Attorney General Ferguson (Excellence in the Practice of Law Award), Judge Tanya Thorp (Ronald R. Ward President’s Award), Erika Evans (Young Lawyer Award) and Judge Judith Hightower (Lifetime Achievement Award).

February 13, 2017 LMBA joins WA Supreme Court amicus brief in City of Seattle v. Erickson, No. 93408-8 (scheduled for oral argument March 14, 2017), supporting jury diversity and stronger protection against race-based exclusion from jury service.

November 8, 2016 LMBA Past President Nicole Gaines-Phelps elected to King County Superior Court Bench!

October 2016 LMBA votes to support Initiative 873 to amend RCW 9A.16.040 to remove “without malice” and “good faith” defenses to criminal liability for an officer’s use of deadly force. LMBA votes to support Senate and House bills in the next Washington Legislative Session to amend RCW 49.60.400 adding a subsection (11): “Actions taken to correct discriminatory impacts of facially neutral policies, when documented such as by a disparity study, are not considered preferential treatment.”

April 2016 – LMBA adopts resolution endorsing a vision for Washington State to reduce unwarranted youth detention.
